What is water quality testing and why is it important for aquatic species? Aquatic pets have a unique situation in they must move, eat, breath and get rid of their waste in the limited amount of water we keep them in. In the ocean or a river or lake, the volume is so great and there are natural systems at work to clean and renew the oxygen in the water and eliminate the toxins. In an artificial environment we must take into account all these factors to keep their environment liveable. We use mechanical, chemical and biologic filtration to keep ahead of these problems as well as water changes. Routine water quality testing makes sure that we are succeeding in managing there environment. If there are problems the first things we are going to check are the water quality parameters because until they are in balance, we can't fix the rest of the problem.
